  Download a Google Drive document to an Office compatible file

To download an existing Google Drive to a file on your computer that you can then open with any standard Office Suite, do the following:

Downloading your Document

  1. In Google Drive, open the document you wish to download.
  2. When viewing the document, click "File"
  3. Click "Download as", "Download file as" or "Download presentation as"
  4. Select the format you want to download to. See below for a description of common file types.
  5. Your browser should automatically start the file download. Choose where to save it and you're done!

Common File Types

  • PPT - Standard presentation file format compatible with most Office applications.
  • Word - Word processing file compatible with OpenOffice and Microsoft Word.
  • Excel - Spreadsheet file compatible with OpenOffice and Microsoft Excel.
  • PDF - Uneditable protected document that can be read with Adobe Reader. Use this format if you want to distribute the file, but don't want anyone making changes to it.
  • HTML - Gives the code for the layout of the file if you wished to embed it into a web page.
  • OpenOffice - A copy of the document tailored specifically for the OpenOffice system.
  • RTF - Rich text format. Similar to Word, but more standardized and easily recognized by outside applications, such as Wordpad.
  • Text - Simple, unformatted text version. Readable in all text editors, such as Notepad.
  • CSV - Comma Separated Values file. Similar to excel format, only more standardized and readable in a variety of other web and desktop applications.
