Using labels to organize your mail
Your medportal email account is for all intents and purposes a regular Gmail account that has been tied to the medportal.ca domain, also known as a "Google Apps" domain. As such, labels work exactly the same as they do in a regular Gmail account, and if you are already familiar with labels there, you already know all you need to in order to start using labels within medportal.
If you are not familiar with the concept of labels, it will help to think of them initially as folders, but they work slightly differently. Instead of a file folder hierarchy, like we are used to in most other email programs and providers, labels are something that is attached to the email, rather than an email being put into a folder. Thus, an email can have multiple labels associated with them, allowing you to search by them.
For example, if you receive instructions from a member of a committee you are a part of, telling you how to access an Elluminate archive relating to Neurosurgery, you may be conflicted as to which folder to place this email in normally. Do you place it in the folder with the rest of the emails of that committee, in your Elluminate folder, or in your Neurosurgery folder (assuming you have such folders, this is simply an example). With Gmail labels, you can place all three labels on that email, and a search for any one of them will produce this email in your search results.
There is also a distinction between emails in your inbox and archived emails. All emails belong to one of these two categories. When you click your Inbox, you will see all messages that have not been archived, however a search in the search field above will check all mail, archived and inbox. To remove an email from your inbox after tagging it, simply select the email and click the "Archive" button.
